Ambassador Michael A. Battle Sr.

USA Ambassador to Tanzania,
USA Embassy

On August 20, 2021, President Biden announced his intention to nominate Dr. Michael Anthony Battle, Sr. as Ambassador to Tanzania. Battle took his official oath for the office on December 21st. He has had a distinguished career of public service spanning four decades as a diplomat, in academia, in the faith community and as a military chaplain. Battle was Executive Vice President/Provost at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. He served as a Senior Advisor to the Bureau of African Affairs at the U.S. Department of State for the U.S. Africa Leader’s Summit in 2014. He also was the U.S. Representative to the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa and the U.S. Ambassador to the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Dr. Grace Magembe

Dr Grace is public health specialist over 20 years experience in managing health systems at sub-national and national levels both preventive curative and promotive. She currently serves as deputy permanent secretary of health at Ministry of health. She holds MBA and MPH. She currently seats on several boards including THS, TASAF, and DUP.

Dr. Ntuli A. Kapologwe

Ntuli Angyelile Kapologwe is a director of health, social welfare and nutrition services (DHSWNS) at PORALG. His major expertise is on healthcare systems management including healthcare financing, public health and management. He graduated as a Medical Doctor (MD) from university of Dar es Salaam before attending at Tumaini University, Tanzania, where he obtained Master’s degree in public health (MPH).. Dr. Kapologwe also holds an MBA in international health management (MBA-IHM) the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) in Basel, Switzerland and Doctor of Philosophy Degree (PhD) at University of Dodoma (UDOM).

Dr. Fatuma Mrisho

Dr. Fatma Hafidh Mrisho, is a permanent secretary in the ministry of health Zanzibar (MoH-Zanzibar) and distinguished healthcare leader with an exceptional record of accomplishments in sexual reproductive health (SRH), HIV, STIs, and multidisciplinary health management. With roles spanning from District Medical Officer to Chairman of the Board of Trustees at the Medical Stores Department, her expertise has been instrumental in shaping national health strategies. As the former Executive Director of the Tanzania Commission for AIDS, she orchestrated strategic interventions, advocated for policies, and mobilized resources for the national HIV response. Dr. Mrisho’s profound contributions have been recognized through her membership in esteemed organizations and international task forces, reinforcing her commitment to advancing healthcare and social justice.

Dr Yenew Kebede

Dr. Yenew Kabede is a head of division, laboratory systems and acting head for division of survaillance and disease intelligence of Africa CDC, African Union (AU) strenghening survellance and laboratory systems. During Tanzania Health Summit, and a speaker Dr. Yenew will discuss the curreent effective survaillance sysytams and early detection strategies for infectious diseases in Africa. He will then share the insights on leveraging data and technology, such as digital health tools and artificial intelligence, to enhance disease monitoring and facilitate timely outbreak identification.

Prof. Sayoki G. Mfinanga

Prof Sayoki Mfinanga is a global health and clinical research expert, mainly in Public Health, Epidemiology, and Preventive Medicine, with over 20 years of research experience. He holds the positions of Chief Research Scientist fellow at the National Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), Muhimbili Centre in Tanzania and Honorary Professor of Global Health at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), University College London and Nelson Mandela-AITS. He is the former Director of NIMR Muhimbili Research Centre. He has led high-impact multi-center Clinical trials that have identified novel biomedical treatment and prevention strategies that are practical, low-cost, and effective, which have been incorporated into national and World Health Organization guidelines and led to changes in clinical practice in Africa, in particularly TB and HIV. He supervises and mentors fellows at NIMR, LSTM, the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences and Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology, Tanzania. He was awarded the Best National Health Scientist on May 17, 2022.

Economist and Health Policy expert, with over 15 years of working experience and in-depth understanding of the Health Sector in the areas of designing, implementing, monitoring and evaluation of policies and plans. Held various positions including Health Basket Fund Coordinator, Assistant Director responsible for budget and planning, Director responsible for policy and Planning in the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children. Currently, working with the National Health Insurance Fund as the Director General with active engagement in the country’s initiative towards Universal Health Insurance.

Jumanne Mtambalike is an accomplished innovator, author, early-stage investor, futurist, entrepreneur, and technology enthusiast who is highly optimistic about Africa’s future. He is widely recognized for his efforts in building stable innovation ecosystems across Africa and is the Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Sahara Ventures, a company solely dedicated to advancing innovation, technology, and entrepreneurship across the continent. Jumanne is best known as the first Manager of Buni Innovation Hub and the driving force behind Silicon Dar, Tanzania’s first naturally-formed technology district situated in Dar es Salaam, the country’s financial capital. Jumanne was voted the most influential Tanzanian in science and technology in both 2017 and 2018, cementing his reputation as an accomplished innovator in his field. His unwavering mantra is to leverage innovation, technology, and entrepreneurship as solutions to Africa’s most complex challenges.

Prof. Harald Renz

Professor and Director,
Institute of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiochemistry, Molecular Diagnostics Philipps University Marburg

Prof. Harald Renz is Professor and Director of the Institute of Laboratory Medicine at the Phillips University of Marburg, Germany. He is currently President of the German Society of Laboratory Medicine (DGKL) and was President of the joint World Laboratory Conference of IFCC, EFCC and DGKL held in Berlin in 2011. He was Visiting Professor of Paediatrics at Harvard Medical School (2011-2013), Visiting Professor at Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem (2017-2018) and is currently Honorary and Adjunct Professor of Laboratory Medicine at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center in Moshi, Tanzania. He coordinates the Hospital Partnership Programme between the Philipps University Marburg and KCMC, with 8 externally funded projects. His research focuses on the development of non-communicable diseases. He has published more than 360 original papers, more than 180 review articles and book chapters, for which he has received numerous prestigious awards. His current H-factor is 85 and his work has been cited more than 28 500 times.

Prof. Tumaini Nagu

Chief Medical Officer,
Ministry of Health

Prof. Nagu is a dedicated physician, passionate academician and mentor. She has a huge portfolio of research and advisory in public health, Internal Medicine, Pulmonary and Infectious Diseases. Her research focuses on determinants of clinical outcomes of diseases. Currently she is the Chief Medical Officer of United Republic of Tanzania, with key roles to oversee the delivery of health services across the entire health system; planning and execution of preventive services; and response to public health emergencies. Prof. Nagu will be chairing the discussion around the challenges and opportunities of achieving UHC in the everchanging population dynamics.

Dr. Salim Slim

Director of Preventive Service and Health Education,
Ministry of Health- Zanzibar

Salim Slim is a public health specialist majored in the field of epidemiology and infectious disease prevention and control, shaping public health policy and health system strengthening. He has over 12 years’ experience in his field. He is currently serving as a Director of Preventive Service and Health Education at the Ministry of Health Zanzibar. Under his leadership Salim has managed to eliminate measles in Zanzibar following a recent outbreak through mass vaccination campaign integrated with Polio vaccine and vitamin A covering every child across Zanzibar (Door to Door). His commitment to Covid-19 vaccine lead to short period of vaccine coverage uptake in Zanzibar, and now working tirelessly to suppress maternal and perinatal death in Zanzibar. Salim hold a Doctorate in public health from university of London, the London school of hygiene and tropical medicine (LSHTM), A master in epidemiology and infectious disease control from the same institute and a Master in Specialist Biomedical Science focusing on Clinical Immunology and Clinical Microbiology from university of East London and He received his bachelor degree with first class honor in Human Molecular Bioscience from faculty of bioscience university of Greenwich., His research interest are on HIV/STIs, TB, malaria, and vaccine.

Mark Bryan Schreiner

Mark Bryan Schreiner is UNFPA’s Country Representative, United Republic of Tanzania. Mark joined UNFPA Tanzania from Rwanda, where he served as the UNFPA Representative from 2017-2021. For the past two decades, Mark served the United Nations as a distinguished leader and advocate for women and young people’s health and development. He has served UNFPA assignments in the Pacific Sub-Regional Office in Fiji Islands, Pakistan, Eritrea, South Africa, Nigeria and Africa Division of UNFPA Headquarters in New York. Mark also worked with UNEP in Kenya and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific in Thailand.

Dr. Samwel Ogillo

Dr. Ogillo is the CEO at APHFTA an umbrella organisation for the Tanzania Private Health Sector. He is dedicated advocate of public-private partinerships in health. He has played a signficant role in promoting investments in health in east African region. Dr Ogillo has served in several policy and strategy formulation committees at the ministry of health in Tanzania and East Africa region.

Dr. Aneesa Arur

Health Systems Specialist,
World Bank

Health systems professional with experience across 18 countries in South Asia, Africa, Europe and Central Asia. Led and managed policy discussions with high level government officials on designing and implementing health sector policy and reforms. Executed and managed complex quantitative analysis to support public health policy design, monitoring and evaluation. Experience with designing and negotiating grants/ loans and supervising implementation of large health sector development projects in low, middle and high income countries. Key areas of interest include: social health insurance, results based financing (pay-for-performance), value based health care, design and management of health systems strengthening interventions, health sector governance, program monitoring, impact evaluation, service delivery innovations and service delivery in fragile and post-conflict settings.

Ms. Lucia Sebastian Pande

Ms. Lucia Sebastian Pande is an esteemed leader and visionary, currently serving as the Secretary General of the Tanzania Red Cross Society, a position to which she was appointed on January 8th, 2023. With a remarkable track record of service and leadership, she brings a wealth of experience and expertise to her role in advancing humanitarian causes and driving positive change. Ms. Pande is also the Vice Chairperson of the Dar es Salaam University College of Education Advisory Board
Before assuming her role as Secretary General, Ms. Pande held the esteemed position of Vice President at the Tanzania Red Cross Society for an impressive tenure of three years. Her dedication and contributions during this period significantly enriched the organization’s humanitarian endeavors and set the stage for her current leadership role.
A true luminary in the field, Ms. Pande is a seasoned expert in Human Resources and Senior Management Leadership. Her proficiency extends across a diverse spectrum of industries, including Mining, Logistics, Manufacturing, and Humanitarian Development. This breadth of experience equips her with a comprehensive perspective that is invaluable in navigating the complex challenges of the modern world.
Ms. Pande’s educational journey has been one of dedicated pursuit of knowledge and excellence. She holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) with a specialization in Human Resource Management from The University of Dar es Salaam, an institution renowned for its academic rigor and contributions to society. Complementing her MBA, Ms. Pande earned a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Public Administration, a testament to her dedication to understanding the intricacies of governance and social dynamics.
Her leadership style is characterized by her visionary thinking, dedication, and profound commitment to humanitarian principles. With a clear focus on empowering communities, enhancing disaster resilience, and promoting social justice, she envisions a future where the Tanzania Red Cross Society continues to play a pivotal role in alleviating human suffering and fostering sustainable development.

Dr. Mfanga is a Public Health Specialist and has experience in medical field for 18 years now. He was a District Medical Officer (DMO) for 9 years and a Chairperson for DMOs in Tanzania for 4 years. Dr. Mfanga is results oriented and has a passion in delivery of sustainable HIV response.

Patrick Kinemo

Director of Programs,
Pathfinder – Tanzania

Patrick Kinemo is a passionate health and management professional. He currently holds the position of Director of Programs at Pathfinder – Tanzania and serves as the Chief of Party for the Momentum Integrated Health Resilience (MIHR) project in Tanzania. In his role, Mr. Kinemo provides leadership and guidance to a dedicated field team responsible for designing and implementing a diverse project portfolio. These projects are designed to bolster the government of Tanzania (Mainland and Zanzibar) in enhancing the quality of health services. The programs/ projects span from FP, RMNCAH, and SVAC programs to integrated population, health, and environment (PHE) / Women-Led Climate Resilience (WLCR). Mr. Kinemo has been instrumental in the designing of the projects and the MIHR project, which is a flagship project that utilizes the integrated PHE / WLCR model to address the intertwined challenges of health, climate, natural resources management, and livelihoods in an integrated manner working closely with conservation partners and other key stakeholders. Mr Kinemo has management training from the University of Liverpool and a Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) from Kings College University of London. He is a former Member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (MRPharmS), UK, and currently a member of the Tanzania Pharmaceutical Society.

With over 16 years of experience in development work and a background in multi-sectoral collaboration, he has led integrated programs that promote community resilience and address various key areas, including women’s empowerment, environmental conservation, and healthcare integration.

Lucy is the Country Director of The Nature Conservancy for Tanzania, overseeing a program focused on addressing critical threats to Tanzania’s natural systems through science-based approaches and policy reforms. With 25 years of experience in natural resources conservation, she previously worked with WWF, facilitating projects to combat poaching, improve conservation efforts, and establish key protected areas in Tanzania.

Professor of Clinical Microbiology and Consultant Clinical Microbiologist and the current Deputy Vice Chancellor Planning, Finance and Administration at the Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences (CUHAS). After learning about Tujibebe, she gained insight into cervical cancer and the importance of the vaccine, motivating her to recieve her second dose.

Dr. Florian a Certified Medical Doctor with 5+ years of experience delivering patientcare excellence. He was born in 1978 in the Kagera region of Tanzania. He is married and is blessed with four children. As a medical doctor and Public Health Specialist ,he served as the District Medical officer and later Regional Medical Officer before appointed as EPI Manager Tanzania. He has served at this post for two years now. His ambition is to see healthy community with everyone vaccinated for VPD.

Dr. Rita Noronha is a public health specialist with over 15 years of experience in implementing and managing health programs with specific emphasis on maternal and newborn health, child health, sexual reproductive health, human resources for health, and reproductive health commodity security. She currently works with Jhpiego as the Chief of Party for USAID Afya – RMNCAH Activity, providing overall technical and programmatic vision, leadership, and strategic direction for the project.

Dr Noronha has expertise in program design, work planning and budgeting, strategy and policy guideline development, business development and resource mobilization. Before joining Jhpiego she served as the Deputy Country Director for Amref Health Africa Tanzania. She has also worked with UNFPA Tanzania as a Program Specialist Health Systems.

Dr. Noronha holds multiple advanced degrees, including a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, a Master of Science in Health Services Research from Erasmus University in the Netherlands, and a Master of Public Health from the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Belgium.

After completion his undergraduate course he came back to his office as Health Laboratory Scientific Officer and appointed to be Head of Diagnostic unit of ZMCP from 2000, and subsequently he participated in comparative study for the treatment of uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria in children in Zanzibar: a randomised placebo-controlled comparative efficacy study.
In 2005, he joined Karolinska Institute of Stockholm- Sweden for Postgraduate course in Research and training in Infectious disease and defended his thesis in 2009 titled Efficacy of artemisinin-based combination therapy and effectiveness of rapid diagnostic test for management of patients with Plasmodium falciparum malaria in Zanzibar. In 2010, he appointed to be Deputy Programme Manager in Zanzibar Malaria Programme until 2016 when he appointed to be Director Training and Research in Mnazi mmoja hospital up to 2021. In 2022 -2023 he worked as a Research Coordinator at the Department of Planning, Policy and Research. From March 2023 he appointed to be Manager in the Zanzibar Public Health Laboratory under Department of Preventive and Health promotion.
